Rotary Goes to School
Members of the Rotary Club of Beaumont recently visited Martin Elementary to distribute books and promote literacy. Over 100 first graders had the opportunity to view 60 different books to help them decide where they had interest. Each student was able to choose at least 10 books.
Through fundraisers, grants and the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, assistance from Fair Park Rotary and a partial match from Rotary District 5910, the club plans to purchase over 1200 books that they will hand out before the end of school in June. “It’s not just about giving away free books, it’s about improving literacy,” said Rotary member and project chair Matt McCallon. “We hope the children will enjoy reading during the summer, and each one will return to school in the fall with improved skills and even more excited about reading.” The Rotary Club of Beaumont also partnered with Martin in September to assist children that were affected by Harvey.
