HB 900 may affect books in WBHS library
Since HB 900 was signed into law Sept. 1, many Texas school libraries are deciding what books they must remove in order to comply with the law. “The way it would affect our school library is we would have books that would not be allowed to be in the school library anymore,” West Brook librarian Lauren Melancon said.

One Pill Can Kill: Region 5 leads the state in fentanyl overdoses
Several survivors of fentanyl overdoses spoke out at the One Pill Can Kill conference held at West Brook High School’s Performing Arts Center Sept. 20. The event, sponsored by the Beaumont Police Department and Beaumont ISD, was to inform, raise awareness, and educate people about fentanyl and the dangers of this drug.

New security system at West Brook rolled out earlier in 2023
Safety in schools has been a hot topic of concern in the last 20 years. In 2023, West Brook High School started taking more precautions with a new metal detector system. “We have great kids, but the new security is also here, not just for our students, but also everyone that enters our school,” Principal Nicholas Phillips said. “We want all our students to go home just the way their parents dropped them off.”

Students believe Beaumont ISD is blocking cell phone service in school—Here’s why that would be illegal
One of the rumors that goes around West Brook High School is that cellphone signal is blocked on campus by cell phone jamming equipment. Beaumont ISD IT Director Toni McPherson explained the district does not block cell phone signals on school property because that would be illegal and violate Federal Communications Commission (FCC) guidelines.

From ASL interpreter to World History Teacher: Mx. Koats begins first year of teaching
Although this is Mx. Kalairn Koats’ first year of teaching, this is not their first year working at West Brook High School. Before becoming a teacher, Koats was an American Sign Language Interpreter. They said they became a teacher because they fell in love with teaching after being an educational interpreter for a couple of years.

Tennis team starts season with wins
West Brook’s tennis team won against Humble ISD 17 to 2 on Sept. 15 and 19 to 0 against Beaumont United High School. Coaches Pat Thomas and Jennifer Alvarez said they are optimistic about a good season and believe they will make the playoffs.
